Your Notion relation formula is blank

4 min read
A gray lamp on an otherwise empty wooden desk

In the depth limit article, a formula failed because the chain behind it was too deep. This article is the other quiet failure. The related page is right there, and the formula cell is blank. 💯

This article is a part of the Fantastic Formulas series. This series features helpful articles about formulas in Notion.

A relation formula that shows nothing is not one bug. Three checks cover the cases you can fix yourself. The relation is empty. You cannot open the related database. Or the formula treated the relation as one page, and skipped the list. Check those before you blame Notion. 👀

Today we will run the three checks. Just like in the previous article, I will proceed with a simple database. This time, let’s say we want the status of the related project. 👀

In this database shown below, you can see 2 properties. First property shows the task name, and the second one is a relation called Project. ✅

Tasks database with a Project relation Example - Simple Tasks database

Launch review points at Launch, and that project’s Status is On track. Northwind audit points at Renewal, which is Late. Studio points at Redesign, On track. Harbor has no project. That empty row is the one the formula has to survive.

1\. The relation is empty

Harbor is not a broken formula. There is no related page, so there is no Status to show. If the formula calls .prop() on that empty relation inside an automation, the run pauses. The guard is the same shape as the quotes article. Check the value, then unwrap it, and return empty() when it is missing. ✅

if(empty(prop("Project")), empty(), prop("Project").first().prop("Status"))

Status of the first related project

empty() on the relation keeps Harbor blank on purpose. The other rows take the first related page, then read Status. A relation is a list even when the row shows one project, so .first() is required. The list article is the longer version of that list. 👀

As you can see below, the formula is perfectly working 🔽

Project status from the first related page first() on Project, then Status

  • Launch review → On track
  • Northwind audit → Late
  • Harbor → blank. No related project.
  • Studio → On track

That blank on Harbor is the answer. It is not the error.

2\. You skipped the list

prop("Project").prop("Status") looks like the property path. It skips the page. Notion’s help center says a relation comes back as a list of pages. To read a property on those pages, take the first item with .first() or .at(0), or loop with .map(). ✅

In a database column, skipping that step is a type problem, not a clean status. In a button or an automation, the run pauses. The AI formula article already has this as one of the four checks. If the cell is blank and the relation is full, this is the first formula to rewrite. 👀

prop("Project").map(current.prop("Status")).join(", ")

Every related status, as text

Use .first() when you want one status. Use .map() when a task can point at more than one project and you want all of them as text.

The third check is access. Notion’s help says that if you do not have access to a referenced database, formulas will not compute reliably. That includes a formula inside a button or a database automation. The related page can exist for someone else. Your cell still stays blank, because the formula cannot see the property configuration. ✅

Open the Projects database from this account. If it asks you to request access, the formula is not the bug. Share the database with the people who run the automation, not only with the people who can see the task row. 👀

If the relation is filled, you can open the related database, and the formula uses .first() with an empty() guard, the cell should show the status. If it is still blank after those three, check Notion status. A short platform incident can blank relation formulas while the formula itself is fine. Do not rewrite a working formula while that is up.

Conclusion

Now you know why a Notion relation formula is blank! Harbor is empty because there is no related page. A full relation still needs .first() or .map(), because it is a list. And a formula cannot read a database you cannot open. Check those three before you blame the formula. 🔥

Short answers

Why is my Notion relation formula blank?

Usually the relation is empty, you do not have access to the related database, or the formula skipped .first() and cannot show a single status.

Does a one-page relation still need .first()?

Yes. A relation is a list even when the row shows one page. Skip .first() and an automation pauses.

What if the related page exists and I can open it?

Guard the empty row, unwrap with .first(), and confirm you can open the related database. If all three are true and the cell is still blank, check Notion status.
